Joseph Ooi Boon Han made our school PROUD by winning the First Prize in both the Perak State Level as well as the National Level (Primary School Category) 2009 Teachers' Day Story Writing Competition

He proudly wrote about his teacher, Mr Tan Guan Hoe, who he says has been inspirational when he was about to start a story telling competition when he was younger. Mr Tan, he says, gave him a THUMBS UP before he started and this has been a guidng light for him since

He received his Prize from Deputy Education Minister, Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, at the National Teacher's Day celebration in Terengganu on Friday.

Here is what Joseph wrote : Teachers' Day Note

I stood on the stage and felt that my knees were weakening. My palms broke out into cold sweats. I could hear my heart thumping faster and faster when it was my turn to deliver my speech. At this moment, suddenly I noticed him standing at the far end corner, giving me a nod, a smile, a gesture with his right thumb upwards. My confidence level soared.

Mr. Tan had been my class teacher for consecutively three years, from Year One to Year Three. It has been said that a teacher’s influence knows no boundaries, and Mr. Tan had greatly influenced me in many ways. He has a heart of gold, always forgiving me for all my wrongdoings. He is the source of knowledge, teaching me everything I need to know from the books as well as knowledge I learn from his vast experiences in life. From whales to eagles, from ants to microorganisms, every lesson with Mr. Tan was a new discovery of myself and the world around us. Like a compass, he activated the magnet of curiosity, knowledge and wisdom in his pupils.

While most pupils shower their beloved teachers with gifts and presents, I know Mr. Tan would not like all this materialism. What he cherishes the most is our sincere gratitude, our inner and outward positive changes. And I want to show him that I will make him proud of me. Taking a deep breath and gathered all my utmost courage, I began my speech…

Joseph and his Inspiration, Mr Tan Guan Hoe
